" I’m watching two school openings slated for autumn 2014: Montessori for All in Austin, TX and Caliber Schools in Richmond, CA. Each is trying an individualized approach where learning activities and groupings change fluidly based on what each child needs...For my money, this is the most interesting, complicated and messiest work going on in K-12 right now. Call it “education R&D for the next century.”
Prototyping and the “Lean Startup” approach are the norm in software, tech, and many other sectors. But we are just starting to see the power of rapid prototyping in education. A new organization in California, Caliber Schools...boldly launched a summer school pilot a year before opening, so that they could test out their theories.
"I support Caliber because they provide another option," said Mason Salvador, a parent whose son is attending the summer program. "My son is learning computers; they are giving him something to fight for." ...Tiffany Acevedo, a 9-year-old who will start fifth grade in the fall, says she hopes...she can attend the school. "Caliber is very exciting," she said. "I love computers. Before, I didn't want to come, but now that I'm having so much fun here, I never want to leave."
